The short answer

What is Brand Identity Design?

Updated · By the Open Speck Studio team

Brand identity design is the creation of the visual and verbal system a company uses to present itself consistently. It typically includes a logo, color palette, typography, imagery style, graphic elements and tone of voice, documented in guidelines so every touchpoint, from a website to packaging or a sales deck, looks and sounds like the same business.

We build brand identities that hold up in use, not just in a presentation. The work starts with a free strategy call and a written growth map, then a short positioning phase where we pin down who you serve, what you want to be known for and which competitors you need to look different from. Only then do we design. You see two or three distinct directions, each shown on real applications like your homepage, a social post and a business card, so you judge the identity where it will live. The chosen direction becomes a full system: logo suite, color palette with accessible pairings, type scale, imagery rules and tone of voice. Because our marketing team uses the same system for ads and content, we test it early on real channels and fix anything that looks weak in a feed or on a small screen before it is final.

What's included

What you get with our brand identity design

01

Positioning and brand audit

We review your current materials, competitors and customer language, then agree on positioning, personality and the few ideas the brand must communicate before any visual exploration begins.

02

Visual identity directions

Two or three distinct creative routes, each with a logo concept, colors and type, shown on real applications so you can compare how they would feel in daily use.

03

Logo suite and marks

Primary logo, secondary lockups, icon mark and one-color versions, prepared for light and dark backgrounds and tested at small sizes such as favicons and social avatars.

04

Color and typography system

A defined palette with contrast-checked pairings, primary and supporting typefaces, and a type scale for headings and body text that works on screen and in print.

05

Tone of voice guide

Plain rules for how the brand writes, with example headlines, words to use and avoid, and before-and-after rewrites your team can reference when drafting emails, ads or pages.

06

Brand guidelines document

A practical guidelines file covering logo use, spacing, color, type, imagery and voice, with correct and incorrect examples so new hires and freelancers apply the brand correctly.

Process

How a brand identity engagement runs

Step 1

Discovery and positioning

After the strategy call and growth map, we run a working session on your audience, competitors and ambitions, then write a short positioning brief that the visual work must answer.

Step 2

Creative directions

We present two or three different directions applied to real touchpoints. You choose one, or combine parts of several, with clear reasoning from us on the tradeoffs involved.

Step 3

System refinement

We develop the chosen route into a complete system, refining the logo, palette, type and graphic elements, and test everything on your website, social formats and printed items.

Step 4

Guidelines and rollout

We package final files and guidelines, walk your team through them on a call, and help apply the identity to priority touchpoints during the two weeks of post-launch support.

By industry

Brand Identity Design for your industry

What changes in the work depending on the market you sell into.

Technology and software

Tech brands need an identity that stands apart from a crowded field of similar-looking startups, scales across product UI, docs and events, and still feels credible to enterprise buyers.

Finance and insurance

Financial brands must signal stability and trust without looking dated, work within regulator and partner requirements, and stay consistent across apps, statements, branch materials and advisor communications.

Healthcare

Healthcare identities need to feel calm and trustworthy, remain accessible to patients with low vision, and apply consistently across clinics, signage, patient forms and digital booking tools.

Retail and consumer brands

Retail brands live on shelves, shopping bags, storefronts and product pages, so the identity has to be memorable at a glance and flexible enough for seasonal campaigns and promotions.

Real estate and construction

Real estate brands must signal local knowledge and professionalism, and the system has to apply cleanly to signage, listing photos, brochures and agent profiles across many properties.

Tourism and hospitality

In hospitality the brand is part of the experience itself, carried through menus, signage, uniforms, room details and social content, so the identity must feel distinct and photograph well.

Manufacturing

Manufacturers often carry decades of brand drift across catalogs, trade show booths and product labels, so a new identity must modernize the look while keeping recognition with long-standing distributors.

Logistics and distribution

Logistics brands appear on trucks, containers, uniforms and paperwork, so the identity must stay legible at a distance and in motion, and communicate reliability to shippers and partners.

Life sciences and biotech

Life sciences companies need an identity that feels rigorous to investors, regulators and scientific partners, while still helping recruitment and explaining complex work to broader audiences.

Higher education

Schools and training providers need a brand that appeals to students and reassures parents or employers, while working across campus signage, merchandise, prospectuses and learning platforms.

Media and entertainment

Media brands need a flexible identity that frames very different content, from video thumbnails to podcasts and newsletters, while staying recognizable in crowded social feeds.

Energy

Energy brands are judged on credibility and long-term commitment, so the identity must work on industrial sites, vehicles and investor reports as well as on consumer-facing websites and campaigns.

Government and public sector

Government and public agencies need identities that feel neutral and trustworthy, meet accessibility standards, and stay consistent across departments, programs and printed notices sent to residents.

FAQ's

Brand Identity Design questions, answered

Straight answers to what founders ask us before starting.

A brand identity package usually includes a logo suite, color palette, typography, imagery direction, tone of voice and brand guidelines. Ours also includes a positioning brief and templates for key touchpoints like social posts and business cards, plus Figma source files. The exact scope is agreed after the free strategy call so you only pay for what you need.

Our brand identity projects start around $5,000 for a focused system and commonly sit in the $5k–$15k band. Larger projects with deeper research, naming support or many applications move into $15k–$40k. The main cost drivers are positioning depth and the number of touchpoints we design, and the price is fixed in writing after the strategy call.

A logo is one mark, while a brand identity is the full system around it: colors, typefaces, imagery, layouts, voice and the rules for using them. A logo alone cannot keep a website, sales deck and ad campaign consistent. The identity system does that, which is why growing companies usually need more than a logo.

A brand identity project with us typically takes three to six weeks from kickoff to final guidelines. Positioning and feedback speed are the biggest variables. Rolling the new identity out across a website, packaging or signage takes additional time, and we often plan that rollout in phases so the business keeps running while the change happens.

Yes. Once the project is paid, you own the final logo, brand assets and guidelines we create for you, along with the editable source files. Fonts and stock images are licensed separately by their owners, and we tell you exactly which licenses you need before anything is finalized, so there are no surprises later.

A brand identity is working when people recognize and remember you, and when your team applies it consistently without asking. We look at practical signals: ad and email performance after the switch, sales feedback, and whether new materials match the guidelines. Since our marketing team uses the brand daily, weak spots show up quickly and get fixed.
